The Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) exam is the most widely recognized credential in the field. AAMI publishes the current exam content outline and eligibility requirements — always verify those directly before scheduling.
This guide is not a substitute for the official AAMI handbook. It is a practical study plan based on where most candidates spend too much time and where they leave easy points on the table.
The four exam domains
The CBET exam content outline is organized into four broad domains. Check the current AAMI weighting before you build your study plan — it has shifted over the years:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Public safety in healthcare facilities
- Electricity and electronics fundamentals
- Medical equipment function and operation
Where most candidates lose points
- Electrical safety standards specifics — leakage current limits, ground resistance values, NFPA 99 and IEC 60601 numbers. Memorize the actual numbers.
- IV pump pressure and flow rate calculations — read the question carefully; units matter.
- Defibrillator energy delivery — joules, biphasic vs. monophasic, paddle vs. pad impedance considerations.
- Electrosurgery — monopolar vs. bipolar, return electrode monitoring, capacitive coupling
- X-ray and imaging fundamentals — kVp, mA, mAs relationships and what each controls.
A realistic 8-week study plan
Most candidates pass with 60–100 hours of focused study, spread across 6–10 weeks. Cramming the weekend before does not work — the exam is broad.
- Weeks 1–2: Anatomy and physiology — body systems, vital signs, common pathologies relevant to the devices BMETs service
- Week 3: Electricity and electronics — Ohm's law, AC vs. DC, capacitors, inductors, op-amps, digital logic
- Week 4: Electrical safety — IEC 60601, NFPA 99, leakage limits, isolation transformers, line isolation monitors
- Weeks 5–6: Medical equipment — monitoring, life support, therapeutic, diagnostic, imaging fundamentals
- Week 7: Healthcare facility safety, medical gas, infection control, sterilization, HIPAA basics
- Week 8: Full practice exams under timed conditions, then targeted review of weak areas
